2.1 Tidal basin morphodynamics on decadal to centennial timescale
Predicting effects of sea level rise on tidal basins requires morphodynamic modeling over large spatial and temporal scales. Furthermore, high spatial resolution is required for estimating the impact on ecology and flood-safety. This combination of requirements along the scale cascade (figure below) cannot be fulfilled by the available models. The process-based Delft3D software enables modeling at high spatial resolution, but at high computation cost and with uncertain validity for long-term predictions. The reduced complexity ASMITA approach is suitable for long-term predictions, but with low spatial resolution. We will improve the long term modeling by adding processes to ASMITA and modifying it for higher resolution simulations. Moreover, we will develop a next generation (hybrid) model combining the best of ASMITA and Delft3D.
